When you become more serious about learning the different styles, you'll need shoes specific to either Latin/Rhythm or Standard/Smooth. But here are a few suggestions that will be comfortable for both styles when you are first starting out.

You may want to dance for hours at the next party, but keep in mind your foot comfort. If high heels are hard for you to wear, check out the lower 1.5" Cuban Heel. Most shoes can be custom ordered in a Cuban heel, even if not noted in the store. Visit the Cuban Heel department.
As a beginner, you'll want a shoe that is versatile in style for any dance you may be learning. With that in mind, choose a 1" heel, rather than the higher Latin heel, unless you know you'll be focusing on Latin/rhythm dances exclusively.
The suede on the soles of your shoes will become matted from dirt. A specially designed wire shoebrush is needed to pull the nap back up on the suede and refresh the traction, so it will not be too slippery.
