Description: The paso doble is a dancing interpretation of the matador and his cape. The lady plays the part of the cape, although in some movements takes the role of a flamenco dancer as well. The distinctly recognizable march-style music is dramatic and powerful, just as one would hear in the bullring. The pattern positions and holds emulate the poses and stances taken by the matador with his cape. The most popular songs for the paso are “Espana Cani” and “Spanish Gypsy Dance”, which feature three distinct breaks in the music. To match the traditional phrasing and highlights in the music, competitive dancers choreography their routines to fit the music. Paso doble music that does not have these traditional breaks is rarely, if ever, used at competition. At the lower competitive levels, the song is usually played until the second highlight. For open competition, the entire song is used. |
