Erik and I attended the Grand Finale party of EZ Dancing studio this weekend. Evelyn Alvarez, the owner, and the family and staff of EZ have a special place in our hearts, as they always supported us, even at the very start of our partnership. Evelyn invited us several times to do shows at the studio to fundraise for our competition expenses. In fact, we did our first show as partners together at EZ. Even before our partnership, Erik had a group class at EZ for quite a long time. We have always know everyone there to be friendly, warm and passionate to dance!
So, it was bittersweet to see them passing on the studio to the new owners, Alma Frey and JD, but they went out in style with a wonderful party. Pros attending the farewell party included adjudicator and instructor Trevor Luff, instructor Nahetzin Velasco, and Argentine Tango teacher, Juan Lopez.
Besides dinner and general dancing, the students and staff put on a great show, featuring the different levels and styles EZ has cultivated over the years. The show opened with a great jazzy number by the “EZ Dancers”, using fun props and costuming and set to the upbeat cha cha
“Poker Face” by Lady GaGa.
The EZ Dancers also closed the show with an entertaining tribute to Michael Jackson, showcasing a variety of dance types set to a medley of his music.
In between, the students and staff provided varied other numbers to the delight of the audience. Of particular note was a milonga tango performed by Carlito Lee and Ricky Rosal. With Carlito in white suit and Ricky in a black suit, they provided a great contrast and elegance to the fast footwork and speed of the dance.
We’re sad to see the end of this chapter for EZ, but the studio will still be open under new ownership and Evelyn will also still be available for privates. Best of luck to the new owners, and we wish Evelyn and the hardworking family and staff some well deserved relaxation! Thank you for your contribution to ballroom dancing in Orange County for 13 years!
